My Virtual Field Trip to San Petronio Basilica

With the opportunity to take a virtual trip, I was able to take a trip to the San Petronio Basilica, the six largest church in Europe, located in Bologna, Italy.

San Petronio is Bologna's most famous and impressive church. Its brick exterior gives off a really nice, regal look on the bottom half. The top half looks a little dated with the dark bricks though there is nothing wrong with it. This church is massive being 132 meters long, 66 meters wide, and 45 meters tall. Construction began in 1390 commissioned by Antonio di Vincenzo. The building was dedicated to Saint Petronio, the city's bishop in the fifth century. The plan after Vincenzo's death was to expand the church, however things fell through as the pope didn't want a church larger than St. Peters. Although the original plans were never completed, it's still amazing. The lower portion is covered in stone and red marble, while the upper portion is covered in exposed bricks. Inside, there are cool features like the world's largest sundial.

While learning more about the church, I was impressed with the history and design behind it. I love the exterior and what's amazing about it is that it came from the 1300s making it a timeless design, not modern but timeless. I like how big and royal the inside looks, reminding me of other churches I've been to. Although, this one takes the cake. This place is really nice and I hope one day I could visit in person!
