My virtual tour was to Piazza Venezia, located in Rome. It took its current form after major demolition and reconstruction between the late 1800s and early 1900s. Its most prominent feature is the Vittoriano, a massive and controversial monument dedicated to Victor Emmanuel II and home to the Altar of the Fatherland, which honors Italy’s Unknown Soldier. To build it, an old neighborhood of Renaissance and medieval buildings was destroyed, and the Palazzetto Venezia was moved beside Palazzo Venezia.
The Vittoriano is 81 meters tall, topped with chariots visible across the city, and its size once allowed a banquet to be held inside the statue of the king’s horse. Although criticized and nicknamed “the wedding cake” and “the typewriter,” it remains a major landmark. Nearby, Palazzo Venezia, once a papal residence, later served as Mussolini’s headquarters, with its balcony used for significant wartime speeches.
I have always wanted to go here since I was a kid because my family is from Italy. I have always seen how beautiful it is. I have to save up and go!
